| We leave Inverness northwards by the A9. In the Cromarty Firth
we sometimes see seals. Beyond the Dornoch Firth we pass by the estate of
Andrew Carnegie into Sutherland. We leave
the main road for Dornoch, the charming county town of Sutherland, where
we have a 35/45-minute break. Have a coffee at one of several cafés,
walk the pleasant streets, visit the 13th century cathedral
(right) where Rocco, baby of Guy Ritchie and Madonna, was christened in
December 2000. Shortly after leaving Dornoch we come in sight of an astonishing statue, 27m (90') high. This is of the First Duke of Sutherland, who did many improvements in Sutherland but whose agents were involved in the most notorious of the Clearances in the Highlands in the 19th century. |
