We leave Inverness northwards by the A9. In the Cromarty Firth we sometimes see seals. Beyond the Dornoch Firth we pass by the estate of Andrew Carnegie into Sutherland. We leave the main road for Dornoch, the charming county town of Sutherland, where we have a 35/45-minute break. Have a coffee at one of several cafés, walk the pleasant streets, visit the 13th century cathedral (right) where Rocco, baby of Guy Ritchie and Madonna, was christened in December 2000.
Shortly after leaving Dornoch we come in sight of an astonishing statue, 27m (90') high. This is of the First Duke of Sutherland, who did many improvements in Sutherland but whose agents were involved in the most notorious of the Clearances in the Highlands in the 19th century.

We continue north and stop for lunch at Lybster's scenic harbour where a building linked to the herring fishing is now the Waterlines Café and exhibition.
We continue to the Castle of Mey, situated with beautiful views over the Pentland Firth. We spend an hour-and-a-half here at the castle; its gardens; andbefore driving east and then south through Wick, county town of Caithness, and thence to Inverness.

This tour has strong links with 3 Commonwealth Prime Ministers: Sir John A Macdonald and John G Diefenbaker of Canada and Peter Fraser of New Zealand. Other more or less well-known people who have associations with this itinerary include the writers Neil Gunn, Robert Louis Stevenson and Harriet Beecher Stowe and the actress Aline Mowat - yes, you've probably seen her in something, even if you don't recognise the name!
